Bruins keep rolling by flattening Blues in St. Louis
Hockey Betting Lines
12/21/2008 - St. Louis, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Rookie Blake Wheeler scored twice as the Boston Bruins doubled up the St. Louis Blues, 6-3, at the Scottrade Center.
Michael Ryder posted a goal and an assist and David Krejci collected three helpers for the Bruins, who have won five in a row and improved to 19-2-1 in their last 22 games.
Phil Kessel recorded two assists to extend his points streak to an NHL-best 18 games. The fifth overall pick in the 2006 draft, Kessel has 14 goals and 14 assists during his amazing run, which is the longest such streak by a Bruin since Adam Oates recorded points in 20 straight games from January 7 through February 20, 1997.
Manny Fernandez made 29 saves to earn his 11th win of the season.
Before the game, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli provided an update on the condition of center Patrice Bergeron, who was injured in Saturday's 4-2 win over Carolina.
"After first being treated at the TD Banknorth Garden yesterday, Patrice was diagnosed as having sustained a concussion and was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital under the care of Dr. Peter Asnis. Since being admitted to MGH, Patrice has undergone extensive testing, and all of his results have come back normal. When examined this morning, his condition had improved greatly over last night, and he was released from the hospital. There is no timetable for his return to the ice."
Bergeron missed all but 10 games last season while recovering from a severe concussion suffered in a game versus Philadelphia on October 27, 2007.
Jay McClement, Brad Winchester and Yan Stastny scored for the Blues, who have dropped six of their last seven games. Manny Legace was victimized in defeat for five goals on 23 shots and subsequently pulled in the third period. Chris Mason made five saves over the final 20 minutes.
Wheeler opened the scoring at the 2:27 mark of the first period, one-timing a feed from Krejci, and scored a short-handed tally on a fantastic individual effort at 4:59, going through three players and stuffing his own rebound.
Winchester's power-play marker put St. Louis on the board at 6:18, then McClement netted a short-handed goal, tying the score with 3:09 remaining in the first.
Hnidy lit the lamp while up a man 53 seconds later to restore the lead for Boston.
Stastny evened the score 2:46 into the middle stanza, but Ryder's power-play goal put the Bruins up for good at 9:34. P.J. Axelsson held the puck along the left boards, found a seam and slipped a cross-ice pass to Ryder, who ripped a shot past Legace.
Boston grabbed a two-goal advantage with 3:03 remaining in the second period. Milan Lucic played the puck along the wall to Kessel and he carried down the right wing. The young sniper then sent a pass to the slot for Marc Savard, who snapped a wrister over the glove of Legace.
Vladimir Sobotka added a tally in the third period for Boston.

MySportsbook.com and Kentucky Derby Offer Bonuses
The 2008 Kentucky Derby has announced a $1-million bonus for this weekend’s 134th ‘Run for the Roses’ and MySportsbook.com is doing the same.
Well, not quite $1 million, but MySportsbook.com is offering a 75% rebate for Kentucky Derby lines. Check out the exclusive horse racing bonus for all the details.
According to MySportsbook.com, the favorites for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky are: Curlin (+250); Street Sense (+500); Scat Daddy (+700); Circular Quay (+750); and Nobiz Like Shobiz (+800).
Derby organizers announced this week that there will be a $1-million bonus at the 2007 Kentucky Derby odds if the first-place horse wins by more than 6 1/2 lengths – the margin of Barbaro's victory last year. The bonus would be divided Saturday among the winning trainer, jockey, owner and a charity, with each receiving 25 percent. The designated charity is the Barbaro Memorial Fund.
''It's certainly creative, it's certainly fun and it has something for the horsemen, which we always want to embrace,'' Churchill Downs president and chief executive Robert Evans said at a news conference. ''What's really cool is it will force us to remember Barbaro.''
Meanwhile, the Derby favorite – Curlin – is going against the odds this year. It's been 125 years since Apollo won after skipping his 2-year-old season, and not since Regret in 1915 has such a lightly seasoned horse worn the blanket of red roses.
Arkansas Derby winner Curlin – unbeaten in three career races – tries to overcome both those obstacles in Saturday's 133rd Derby.
''We're not running against history,'' trainer Steve Asmussen said Monday. ''We're running against who they load up.''
Six other horses have run in the Derby without benefit of 2-year-old races and with three or fewer starts. The best any of them managed was a sixth-place finish by Showing Up last year.
Asmussen dismissed suggestions that Curlin's lack of racing experience could keep him from the winner's circle.
”He exudes confidence and he's got a great presence about him,'' the trainer said. ''I feel great about the position we're in. He's not worried about anything, why should you be?''
The Kentucky Derby is at 4:04 p.m., ET Saturday.

Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. The Steelers jumped on Baltimore early, building a 13-0 first half lead, and never let up on their way to a fairly easy win. Although the Ravens did close to within two points in the fourth quarter, it never appeared as if they had enough offense to pull off the upset.
The Steelers dominating defense held Baltimore to a total of 198 yards while allowing them to convert just three third downs in 13 attempts. Pittsburgh also forced quarterback Joe Flacco into three interceptions, one of which safety Troy Polamalu returned fourty yards for a touchdown.
The Cardinals, by far the playoff team with the longest odds to reach Super Bowl XLIII, did so yesterday with a 32-25 upset of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship. Arizona charged out of the gates and built a 24-6 halftime lead that had the Eagles venerable defense reeling. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.
Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.
